Quinta do Feliz Dragão - the farm of the happy dragon - A spectacular and beautifully renovated, typical Algarvean farmhouse and cottage with pool, nestled into the edge of a valley, with incredible views. Generous interiors and ample exterior spaces, which capture the farmhouse essence of the vernacular architecture, landscape and quiet rural lifestyle.

With all modern conveniences, a beautiful square mosaic pool and terraces for every occasion, Quinta do Feliz Dragão with its 5 double bedrooms, is a dream retreat, ideal for relaxing at home and being well located for visiting all the beautiful beaches and coastal historic towns.

What is the outside area like?

Set above a rural enclave of small holdings and country houses the grounds have far reaching views over the valley and its small winding river and coastal line. Horses graze in the fields beyond the nearby horse riding school and further north, the national forest paths lead to beautiful copses and a lake.

The Quinta is south facing with cobbled terraces running the length of this single-storey farmhouse. Under the dappled arbour of an ancient vine is a large dining area seating eight, in front of the sun lounge and generous flower beds of mature bougainvillea and wisteria plants that contour the elevated terraces and provide shade and privacy. The square 5m x 5m mosaiced pool with its antique stone surround and water funnels was once the site of the farm well and is central to the generous stretch of terrace in front of the bedrooms.

Just outside to the side of the sun lounge is an original bread oven and barbeque grill area, at close proximity to the wrought iron and mosaiced dining table and front terrace.

The lower garden from the entrance has grassy lawn areas on split levels and mature orchard trees including mango, avocado, citrus, olive, carob and almond, all for the picking when ripe! The house and terraced areas are reached by a wide, steep staircase and there are more steps behind the house to the 2.8 hectares of land. There is a covered parking area near the entrance to the grounds and more parking beside the adjoining cottage.

What is the interior like?

The traditional thick stone walls and high ceilings of the house ensure a cool ambient in summer and lend to keep the warmth in over the winter months. Air conditioning is available in each bedroom.

Stylish decor and comfortable sofas furnish both of the living areas, and there is a wood burning stove in the main lounge.  The kitchen and dining room are in the very welcoming style of an country manor kitchen, spacious and open-planned yet equipped with all modern appliances.

The beautifully furnished bedrooms are all en-suite excepting the annex room.

The ancient bread oven and barbeque are located just outside the kitchen and sun lounge - a must for foodies and barbeque enthusiasts!

To the left of the lounge and kitchen there is a very sunny television room, furnished with lots of comfortable sofas and a little bar.  The main house has UK free to view BBc and ITV channels, the cottage also receives English satellite channels. Both houses have unlimited Wifi access.

The one-bedroom cottage is located to the east side of the house and pool and provides an independent, fully equipped and comfortable accommodation for two people, comprising a living room with wood burning stove, kitchen, bedroom with air conditioning, bathroom and exterior seating area.


The windows and doors mostly have fixed mosquito nets and shutters. Both houses have wood burners.

Two of the bedrooms in the main house are accessed only from the terrace, not internally.

Are sun loungers and umbrellas provided?

Quality sun loungers deck the terrace around the pool and there are sun umbrellas, canopies, exterior tables and chairs available.

What are the dimensions of the pool? What type of pool cleaning?

5 m x 5 m with steps leading into a shallow end of 1.5 m and a deeper end of 1.8 m. Freshwater pool with Chlorine cleaning system. The pool is serviced twice weekly during summer and once weekly during the rest of the year by a competent and reliable professional. Pool and garden lighting is available.

How far are the shops and restaurants?

There are a quantity of quality restaurants and amenities within 2 -5 km from the property.

How far are the beaches?

The white sandy spit islands of Cabanas, Tavira, Cacela Velha and many more can be reached within 5 to 15 minutes drive.

How far are the golf courses?

There are excellent golf courses within 5 to 15 minutes drive from the accommodation. The closest is Benamor, which is just behind Almargem, the location of the villa, and slightly further are Quinta da Ria and Quinta da Cima and Monte Rei.

Is a car recommended for this property?

Yes, especially in the heat of summer…and for reaching all the beautiful and interesting places further afield. Car rental, taxi transfers and bicycle hire can be organized with local reputable firms in advance or by calling the local representative.


Is the accommodation suitable for children?

Parents must be aware that there are steep sets of stairs leading up to the main house with a low containing wall between the terraces and the garden below which has a few metres drop.

Therefore, we would recommend this accommodation for families with children not younger than 7 years old, unless they are babes in arms.

What facilities are there for babies and children?

There is a cot and high chair provided. Please let us know if you have any other requirements.

Is the accommodation suitable for elderly?

Both the main house and the cottage are on one level and the access to the cottage is suitable for elder or less mobile people as there is parking just outside, so one needn’t navigate the steep steps.

How close are the nearest neighbours? Is the property overlooked?

Quinta do Feliz Dragão is not overlooked and neighbouring houses are located below the property yet near enough to not feel isolated.

What type of access it there to the property?

Good tarmac roads reach the accommodation, less than 8 minutes’ drive to both Tavira and Cabanas, 30 minutes’ drive from Spain and Faro.

How quiet is the area around the property?

This is a quiet rural location, with a handful of country houses situated below on a quiet country road.

Is smoking permitted?

Ashtrays are provided for smoking outside the property.

Are pets allowed at the accommodation?

Due to the possibility of guests being allergic to animal hair, we would rather not allow pets.

Which is the changeover day and time?

Flexible, though we aim to keep bookings as close as possible. Departure is by 10am and arrival is from 2pm unless otherwise arranged.

Are linen, bath towels and beach towels provided?

Yes, we provide a once weekly linen and bathroom towel change including a clean of the bathrooms. During longer winter lets cleaning and linen changes are agreed on an individual basis.

Will there be provisions at the accommodation upon arrival?

There will be some toilet paper and soap for arrivals and a hamper of beverages, with additional breakfast and snacks are provided for late arrivals.

Will there be a local representative available on arrival and in the event that we need any assistance?

Guests will be met at the villa, or otherwise informed where to locate the key and visited soon after arrival. We ensure a prompt and competent service from a team of property managers, who can be contacted at anytime.

Further details:

In July and august both the main house and cottage are only rented together, during spring and autumn we can let the main house without the cottage in case of less occupancy requirements. In this case, the cottage will remain closed. In winter we can let either the cottage or the main house or together, according to requirement. We do not let the main house and cottage separately to different parties, in order to ensure privacy.

The pricing advertised is for the main house plus cottage.  Quinta Feliz Dragão is available without the cottage in High, Mid and Low seasons.  The pricing for this is less 450, 400 and 350 euros respectively per season.

There is an air conditioning allowance of 50 euro per week, the meter reading on arrival and upon departure will determine if anything extra needs to be paid locally, based on 0.15 euro per kwh.

We require a 500 euro breakage deposit paid with the balance payment and refunded accordingly within one week of departure, by bank transfer or paypal.

A booking process fee of 20 euros per reservation will be charged with the first payment.
